I put the pictures from my computer to my phone and upload from there.

You need to edit them to fit in a secondary program, which also means you need to take picture don your camera with Instagram in mind.

I often transfer images from my DSLR to my phone to use on Instagram. There are some great apps though to edit photos outside of IG before you go there. Check out VSCO, that's a good place to start.
